MEDICAL
FACILITIES:

Major
medical centers are located within an hour of the County in Richmond,
Norfolk and Newport News.

Closest
hospitals are Rappahannock General (76 beds - 20 miles),
Riverside-Walter Reed (68 beds - 20 miles) and Riverside-Tappahannock (92
beds - 30 miles). From these hospitals, Nightingale emergency
medical helicopter service is provided to major medical centers as
needed.
SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS:
Active service organizations within the
County include the Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, Federated Woman's Club, Rescue Squad,
Volunteer Fire Departments, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Power Squadron and an
active full-service YMCA.
RECREATION:

For water enthusiasts, Middlesex County is
an ideal recreation area. Bordered by the Rappahannock River, the
Piankatank River, the Chesapeake Bay and various deep water creeks,
water enthusiasts can choose from boating and sailing to water skiing,
fishing and crabbing. Local facilities include various full
service marinas, launching ramps, charter services and campgrounds.

For non-water enthusiasts, there is the
Virginia Raceway that provides major competitive dirt track car racing,
the Piankatank River Golf Club that offers an 18 hole golf course and
fine dining, the Holly Point Nature Park (37 acres) for a leisurely
stroll, public and private swimming pools and tennis courts, and horse
riding stables. Lastly, for those who want to relax, there's
always the opportunity to just sit and enjoy the views.
LODGING, LIBRARIES, AND MUSEUMS:
Lodging - There
are three motels in the County with 52 rooms, 15 inns/bed and breakfasts, and
one youth hostel.
Public
Libraries - There
are two public libraries with over 30,000 volumes.
Museums - The
Middlesex County Museum, the first County museum in the state, is located near the Courthouse complex.
The Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park provides boat
building classes for adults and children, and attracts participants from within
and outside the area.
RECURRING FESTIVALS:
Several events and festivals occur
throughout the year, the most notable being the Urbanna Oyster Festival
held each year in the Fall. The Middlesex Art Guild sponsors the
"Art on the Half Shell Festival," which is held in Urbanna each Spring.
